CENOTE 'IK KIL'

TRANSPORTATION

In Cancún there are several ways to transportation including cars, taxis, boats and airplanes. The best way to learn is to just do it.

TAXI
Literally everywhere in Cancún you can find a taxi. Depending on where you want to go and where your residence is, the costs varies. From, to, and within the Hotel Zone, the taxis are the most expensive. However, you should never ask the taxi driver upfront what the costs will be, then they know you are not familiar with the prices and they will charge more. Within this area you should give the driver 60 to 80 pesos at your destination and show that you are confident.

Downtown, you always give the driver 25 to 40 pesos, depending on the distance.
When taking a taxi to the airport, you also have to take in consideration that these prices will be much higher. Also take into account that only a limited number of drivers speak English, most of them will not speak any English whatsoever. However, both to the Hotel Zone and the airport there are great alternatives like buses to travel with the same quality for a much lower price.

How do I recognize a taxi in this place?
- In Cancún you can recognize the taxis by their white surface with a green horizontal stripe over the car.
- In Playa del Carmen taxis are white with a blue stripe.
- In Tulum taxis are white with a red stripe.
- Lastly, the taxis on Isla Mujeres are red with a white horizontal stripe but since there are not many cars on the island it is not difficult to recognize them.

BUSES
For all buses including buses to and from the Hotel Zone cost between 7 and 10 pesos. This is much cheaper than taxis and they come every couple of minutes. In Cancun there are a few main bus lines: R-1, R-2, R-11, R-15, R-26 and R-44.
The R-1 and R-2 run 24/7 and they will go to the Hotel Zone. Please keep in mind that only half of them go to Wet n’ Wild, you will have to ask the driver to go there.
Moreover, R-1 will drive to Puerto Juarez where you can take the ferry to Isla Mujeres.

R-2 and R-15 will go to the Walmart and Market 28 in downtown Cancun.
R-26 will go to Plaza Las Americas.
You will always have to tell the bus driver to stop at your destination; they will not automatically stop everywhere. But there are stop buttons in the bus so whenever you press this button the bus driver will stop.

Moreover, we have found a link where you can find the routes of every buss in Cancun. Take a look at : http://cancun.rutadirecta.com/
You can also download the app BusCun. This app provides you all the routes of every bus.

Additionally, next to the city buses there are also many buses that have a great connexion between Cancún and other cities like Mérida, Valladolid, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Holbox and many others. The company that operates these busses is called ADO, in almost every city in Mexico ADO has connexions and therefore it is a great medium to travel to nearby places. The buses are often very decent with radio, air-conditioning, movies and drinks, and not expensive at all. Moreover, the ADO buses go to the airport and are much cheaper than a taxi or shuttle.
For the schedules and prices take a look at http://www.ado.com.mx/

Several indications for the prices are:
Cancún - International Airport  = 68 pesos one-way
Cancún - Playa del Carmen     = 64 pesos one-way
Cancún - Mérida                       = 220 pesos one-way

You can find the ADO station in Cancún at the Ibis right across the street of Plaza Las Americas at Avenida Tulum or the big ADO station downtown

FERRY
There are several locations in Cancún where you will be able to take the ferry to Isla Mujeres. This will cost you around 70 pesos each way. They go twice an hour, but take into account that they do not run 24/7 and you catch the last one in the evening.
You can either take the ferry at Gran Peurto, Puerto Juarex or Punta Sam.

The best option is to take the Ulta Mar service ferry from Gran Puerto. The first one to the island leaves at 5 AM and then every half an hour until 9:30 PM, from then every hour until 11:30 PM. The first one from the island leaves at 5:30 AM an goes every half an hour until 9 PM and then every hour until 12 AM.

For more information take a look at the schedule and prices at http://www.granpuerto.com.mx/

Moreover, this same company also provides boat rides from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel and from Chiquilá to Holbox. Cozumel and Holbox are both beautiful places to visit and spend a day or 2.

CAR RENTAL
Depending on the type of car and the duration of the rental, prices differ significantly.
Mostly, for a decent car it will cost you around 3500 to 4500 pesos per week. The traffic in Mexico is very different than in Europe so please consider this before making any decisions. However, when you want to make trips through Quintana Roo and Yucatan it is recommended to rent a car since it is much more mobile and faster than taking touring busses.

You are required to rent a car from the age of 21, however, between the age of 21 to 24 you are required to pay an extra fee between the 70 and 90 pesos depending on your location.
