FRUITS FROM MEXICO

COCONUT
The coconut is actually not a nut. It has originally three layers, which are very difficult to go through. You can drink and eat the centre of the coconut. The meat of the coconut is mostly dried and used in dishes. The coconut water contains sugar, dietary fiber, proteins, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and many more. 
MELON
Melon is a really fleshy fruit, that almost always has a sweet flavour when ripe. There are many different kinds of melons, such as winter melon, watermelon, horned melon, bitter lemon, and many more. The top of the melon can be smelled to check whether it is ripe or not. Cut the melon in half, remove the seeds and do not eat the peel.
MANGO
Ripe mangos vary in size and colour. You have to put some pressure on the fruits to check whether they are ripe or not. The mango can be yellow, orange, red or green, and it tastes very sweet. The peel can be eaten, but it also can be taken off. Cut the mango in half and take out the seed.
ATEMOYA
The Atemoya is actually a mix of two fruits: the sugar apple and the cherimoya. The fruit is heart-shaped, has a pale green skin and is ripe when it feels like a ripe avocado when the fruit is pressed on. The taste is sweet, a little tart, and with a little vanilla. The flesh can be scooped out of the shell when cut in half.
GUAYABA
The Guayaba smells like lemons, and tastes slightly sour but sweet, like strawberries. The fruit is ripe when the skin is yellow/green. Moreover, the tropical aromas can be smelled when they are ready to be eaten. It can be eated as whole, or it can be sliced. Also, the peel is very healthy and can be eaten.
MARACUYA 
The Maracuya is the well-known passion fruit. The fruit is dark purple or yellow when it's ripe. Remember to not eat the shell, only the seeds and de liquid inside can be eaten. Cut it half and scoop it out. It is very taste through a salad, yoghurt and in pastries. It has a very nice sweet to sour taste. 27% of the fruit consists of fiber, which is one of its many health benefits.
CAIMITO
The Caimito is typically two to three inches in diameter and purple when ripe. It is also called the star apple, because when cut, half a star pattern is visible in the pulp. This fruit is very healthy and full with antioxidants. The skin and seeds can not be eaten. You eat it by cutting in half and scoop the flesh out with a spoon.
CARAMBOLA 
Also known as 'starfruit', as this fruit clearly dissembles a star. The peel is thin, smooth and waxy. When the fruit is ripe, it turns yellow. The Carambola is rich in antioxidants, potassium, vitamin C and moreover low in sugar. The flavour is somewhat like an apple, pear and grape. The whole fruit can be eaten. 
LIME
This is a very well-known citrus fruit, full of vitamin C. Mexicans use this in many common dishes of the Mexican kitchen. The peel can be rasped to put extra flavour in the dishes or the juice can be squeezed and sprinkled. Also, 13,5% of the total lime production in the world origins in Mexico.
MAMEY SAPOTE
This fruit has flesh ranging in colour from pink to orange to red. The peel feels like sand paper and is similar to the peel of a peach. The Mamey Sapote is ripe when the flesh is pink. The taste is similar to a mix of pumpkin pie and kiwi. 
GRANADA
This is the pomegranate, which is ripe when the colour is red to purple. Inside there are between 200 and 1400 seeds, which can be eaten. The shell has to be broken open, this can take a while and needs some practice. The seeds are very healthy, rich of antioxidants and vitamins. However, the taste can be very sour or bitter. 
JAMAICA FLOWER
The Jamaica Flower is also known as the hibiscus. Lemonade or tea can be made by putting the flowers in boiling water for one hour. Sugar is often added to sweeten it, because it has a pretty sour taste, more likely to cranberries. The fruit has a lot of health benefits and is full with vitamin C and minerals. 
PAPAYA
You will see a lot of papayas in Mexico, as it is a typical fruit for this country. The fruit is quiet big and ripe when the skin is soft and has a colour amber to orange.The fruit is very healthy and has a significant sweet taste. Make sure the fruit is ripe before eating, because when it is not ripe, a latex fluid can be released, which can irritate the skin. 
PINEAPPLE
The pineapple is a fruit which needs a little practice. The pealing of the pineapple has to be done in a special way. The edges have to be cut off, you must cut around the centre and get the eatable centre out. Also, the piña colada is the best in Mexico and you should try this cocktail.
