EL GRAN MUSEO DEL MUNDO MAYA

El Gran Museo del Mundo Maya is a place where you have to look, listen, think and reflect. In this museum you will jump into the time of the Mayans. The museum is a journey into the history of this magnificent culture, its customs, its rise to power and eventual decline.  

Since 2012, a key date in the Mayan calendar, it is possible to find a new space to take part in the life of this people, in Merida there is the Gran Museo del Mundo Maya. 2012 was a key date because of the ending of the Mayan calendar, and for the entry of a new baktun (20 katun cycles of the ancient Maya Long Count Calendar).

 

The museum has four different permanent exhibition halls. The first “Mayan, Nature and Culture”, especially intended to account for the geographical and natural features of the Maya environment. The second “Mayas today” invites us to reflect and parallelism on the present conditions of Mayan life, addressing inter alia, economic, corporate, customs issues, etc. The third of them “Maya yesterday” is the way to know the traits that characterized and the factors that influence during the time of the conquest. Finally, the fourth permanent exhibit “Ancient Maya” is a walk through the old customs and ways of life. Besides these four halls, there is also the Mayamax room. In this room you can see films and documentaries of high production and artistic quality. 

The Grand Museum of the Mayan is a good opportunity to learn about the life of this civilization. 

El Gran Museo del Mundo Maya is open from Wednesday until Monday from 8am until 5pm. The admission for the museum is 150 Pesos (€7,50)
