CENOTE 'IK KIL'

CHICHÉN ITZÁ

One of the new seven wonders of the world is Chichén Itzá. Chichén itzá is one of the largest Maya cities and has the most diverse population in the Mayan world, a factor that could have contributed to the variety of architectural styles at the site. It is beautiful and absolutely worth it to go there on a day off.

Go inside Chichén Itzá and find a guide here instead of outside, because the guides inside are easier to negotiate with and you can end up with a guide for about €35, -. It can go as long or as short as you want. The pyramid no longer climbable since 2006, because of an American tourist falling to his death.

It may be about a two and a half hours drive from Cancun, but it is absolutely worth it to go there. Since all touring buses from the neighbourhood arrive around noon I would advise you to rent a car and go there yourself in the early morning, then the temperature is also reasonable.

Moreover, on your way back from Chichén Itza you might want to stop at one of the natural sinkholes, which are called ‘cenotes’ to take a fresh jump in the cold water. The most common cenote is Cenote Sagrado, which is 300 meter. It is amazing to see this natural wonder, but keep in mind the touring busses will also stop here so be on time.
